Biography of Antonio Meucci

Early Life

Many people say that Antonio Meucci was the first person who invented telephone instead of Alexander Graham bell because he was a voice communication operator. This thing is true to some extent. This great inventor was born on 13 April 1808 in Italy. His parents had nine children and Antonio Meucci was eldest of them. His father was a government clerk while his mother was a housewife. In year of 1821, he got enrolled in Florence academy where he started his engineering in the age of 15 years. His family was facing some serious financial crisis which didn’t allow Antonio to continue his formal study that is why he started a job as a stage technician. Moving further he also continued his self studies because his financial conditions were not allowing him to study formally in any school or university.

Achievements

In 1834, he designed his first telephone which was working on the pipe principle as used in ships for connection. He made it for connection between the stage and his own practice room so that he may talk to his other technicians easily. In year of 1834, he was arrested due to a blame that he is working with Italian Unification movement and he was kept in imprisonment for 3 months. In year of 1835, he migrated to Cuba with his wife because he was offered a better job. Working in Cuba, his professional career in science started as he invented water purification system.

Contributions

After this job, he started another job at a therapy centre and invented a specific way of treatment. He introduced the way of electric shocks and with the help of this to give remedy to patients. This way became very popular way of therapy for patients and worked in a very good way. After this, he invented an improved telephone used for connection between the treatment room and reception and he named it as a talking telegraph. These inventions raised his fame and inspired F.B Morse of USA to invest in his project.

Inventor of Voice Communication

Antonio Meucci continued his struggle sin Voice communication and as a result he succeeded in transmitting his voice message through wires in 1856. He built up a voice communication apparatus in between his laboratory and his home to talk with his wife who was ill at that time. In next 15 years he developed more than 30 phones which were much improved and were working on the same principle.

Death

People know Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor of telephone but in true sense the Antonio Meucci is the original inventor of telephone. He is not considered as such because he didn’t enter his patent for telephone and Alexander Graham Bell did so. This great scientist died on 18th October, 1889 in the age of 81 years.
