Biography of Dhirubhai Ambani

Early Life

Dhirubhai Ambani founder of Reliance India’s real name was Dhiraj lal Hirach and Ambani. He was born in a town of Gujraat, Chorwad on 28th of December, 1932. He was a son of school teacher. He completed his matriculation at the age of 16. Soon after this he went to Aden, Yemen. There he worked at a gas station and a job of a clerk in an oil company. After very hard work there he returned to India with Rs. 50,000 which he earned there.

Debut in Business field

He was very much interested in doing business. While his stay at Chorward, he used to sell “bhajias”, an Indian eating item, to visitors in Mount Girnar at weekends. But professionally he entered into business field when he returned to India from Yemen.

Progress in Business

With the initial investment of Rs. 50,000 he started business “Majin” in partnership with his second cousin Champak lal Damani. This business was of importing polyester yarn from Yemen to India and exporting spices from India to Yemen. In 1965 this partnership was ended, due to difference in nature of both partners. Dhirubhai was a risk taker and he wanted to introduce products of polyester in market expecting increase in price and lots of profits. But on the other hand his cousin was risk averse, he didn’t allowed him to do so.

After that separation, he started on his own. He introduced the yarn products into the market and the results were astonishing.

Founder of Reliance

His polyester made product “Vimal” became a brand into the interior parts of India. It popularity increased and franchise retail outlets started trading with him. And that become Reliance Textiles. In 1975 year, for check and balance a technical unit from World Bank visited its manufacturing unit.

Reliance India

Initially this company was of textiles only but as the time passed it diversified. Now apart from textile, it includes IT, telecommunication services, energy power, capital market, petrochemicals, retail, logistics, and infrastructures.

Largest Private Sector Industry

In initial times this company was small. As this company grew, large funds were needed. Dhirubhai Ambani collected the funds by making his company registered into capital market. By his financial skills he introduced special convertible debentures and covered all the capital market.

Death

His health was not good as he was attacked by stroke in 1986, which paralyzed his right hand. In 2002 he suffered from second big stroke. On 24th of June he was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai. He was in coma for many days, many doctors were consulted. He eventually died on 6th July 2002.

Reliance after his death

He has two sons Mukesh and Anil. After his death Reliance India split into two companies because of unsettlement of ownership between these two brothers. Reliance Industries Limited owned by Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group by Anil Ambani.

Famous in Media

He became very popular in media. Firstly, in 1988 a biography was published by Hamish McDonald with the name “The Polyester Prince”.

In 2007 a movie on his struggles was made in Bollywood with the name “Guru”.
