Difference between Public Transport and Private Transport

Transport is a source of movement for people from one geographical region to another. One can also transfer luggage and good from one place to other. Transport has been a source of comfort for people over a couple of centuries. Various developmental changes in transport facilities have taken place which proved to be beneficial for humans. Different modes of transport are buses, cars, airplanes and trains. One chooses the mode of transport according to the distance and his affordability. An infrastructure is also needed to run transport system e.g. railway track for trains, airports for planes and roads for buses. It is vital to know the key difference between public transport and private transport.

Public Transport

It is a mode of transport in which number of passengers shares a common transport facility. It includes local buses e.g. Metro bus in Lahore and trains. These transport facilities have specific routs and timings and connect major cities. They are generally run by the Government of a State. Its advantage is that all people travelling through it are charged equal and reasonable fare. But on the other hand, these buses and trains are over stuffed with passengers and there occurs a congested environment inside the vehicle making it difficult to travel through it. Furthermore, timings of these transport facilities are not fixed in developing countries so people have to wait for a long period of time to get into a bus / train.

Private Transport

It is a modality of transportation in which people use their own vehicle for movement e.g. cycle, motor cycle and cars. It has advantage over public transport that it saves time, comfortable in travelling and allows wide use of vehicle according to schedule of the person using it. But it also increases environmental pollution. It is costly as there is shortage of petrol in many countries but its wide use over recent few years has proven that people can afford private vehicles now. Maintenance of vehicle is also a challenge.
