Early Life

Hart Almerrin Massey founder of Massey Ferguson Limited was born on 29th April, 1823 in Haldimand Township which is now known as Alnwick/ Haldimand, Ontario. AT that time it was known as Upper Canada. He was born to Daniel Massey and Lucina Bradley. The doors of the real Massey farmhouse are still available at the present farmhouse of the Massey family.

Hart Massey was known as an industrialist whose leading work was the formation of a company which he named Massey-Harris first. His industrialist mind led him to the formation of the farm manufacturing gigantic company that became famous with the name of Massey Ferguson.

Founder of Massey Ferguson Limited

The original company was founded by his father in 1847 which was named as the Newcastle Foundry and Machine Manufactory located in Newcastle, Ontario. His father’s company was specialized in manufacturing mechanical threshers. His father used to buy parts of threshers from the United States and assembled them in their production plant. But after progress all the parts were designed in the plant. After his father that firm was taken over by him. It was the time of its expansion overall the world. He became the sole proprietor of that company in 1855. After taking over the firm he renamed the company to Massey Manufacturing Co. He is known to be the founder of that company in history, because he was the man who expanded that company and moved that company form the rural areas of Newcastle, Ontario to the city of Toronto. He moved that company to Toronto in 1879. Within short span of time and because of his hard work his company became the largest and leading company of the city of Toronto in terms of employment provider.

Massey Ferguson Limited is a multinational company of Canada in terms of farm machinery manufacturing. It’s headquarter is located in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. This company was founded in the result of a merger between two companies named as the Massey Harris and the Ferguson Company. That merger was done in the year 1953. Massey Harris Company belonged to Hart Massey. It was sold out to AGCO. This company is specialized in manufacturing the agricultural equipment like threshers and tractors.

Its initial name was Massey Harris Ferguson but that name was too long. It was cut short in 1958 and made a brand name as the Massey Ferguson. Now in today’s world Massey Ferguson is the leading brand of agricultural equipment and it has become the main dealer all around the world.

As a Philanthropist

He was also a very great philanthropist. He donated so many gifts and founded the Massey Foundation. That foundation’s primary goal was to complete a project of building a student centre at the University of Toronto. When that centre was completed it was name as Hart House. His foundation also created a hall with his name. That was as a contribution to the culture of Toronto. That hall was named as Massey Hall. He also founded Massey College and remained a member of the Freemasons.

Death

He died in 1896 at his home in Toronto. His body was buried into a graveyard named as Mount Pleasant Cemetery. He had contributed a lot for the agricultural sector.
