Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asian Students 2021 / 2022

The Japan-IMF scholarship program (JISPA) is offering scholarships for Asian students in Japan. These scholarships are for those scholars who want to pursue their MS or PhD studies in different universities affiliated with JISPA. PhD candidates will be given more preference under this scholarship. These scholarships are focusing on highly intellectual students from within Asian developing countries to create a mass of intellectuals in the region. Online application forms will be made available by April 15, 2019. The universities of Japan affiliated with this scholarship program are: (1) National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies; (2) Hitotsubashi University (3) International University of Japan (4) University of Tokyo

Field of Study / Subjects

Applicants can choose any of the following fields for their studies of graduate degree:

  • Macroeconomics Policy
  • Public Policy
  • Arts in Public Economics

Number of Scholarships

Several scholarships are awarded annually to Asian students to study in Masters and PhD programs under Japan-IMF scholarship.

Duration of Scholarship

02 years for Masters / MS degree and 03 years for PhD study program.

The scholarship will cover the first one year. The IMF will decide about the continuation of the scholarship for the subsequent years based on applicant’s academic performance and progress, the university’s recommendation, and the sponsoring agency’s consent.

Scholarship Description / Details

Japan-IMF scholarship program provides many grants for the applicants, these following grants are:

  • Admission and tuition fees
  • A monthly stipend (including a housing and subsistence allowance)
  • Medical / accident insurance
  • One return airfare
  • Research related fees (for PhD scholars only)

Eligibility Criteria

In order to be considered for Japan-IMF scholarship program, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • Applicants must be a national of any of the following countries holding a valid passport:

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

  • Applicant should be an employee of any of the following government agencies or any other agencies that have significant impact on the implementation of macroeconomic policy:

Central bank, ministry of economy, ministry of finance, ministry of planning/development, ministry of trade/commerce, tax administration, national statistics bureau, or financial regulatory agencies.

  • Applicants must be a bachelor’s degree holder or have completed at least 16 years of formal education from any recognized institute.
  • Applicants should be proficient in English with any of the English language proficiency course with minimum official TOEFL score of 550 or iBT79-80. If TOEFL scores are not available, then an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 can be substituted.

Note: Preference will be given to those applicants, who: (1) are less than 40 years (2) haven’t obtained master’s degree outside of their home country; and (3) have 2-3 years of work experience in the public sector.

How to Apply / Download Scholarship Form / Documents Required

Applicants can apply for this scholarship, must follow some steps:

  • Applicants must apply via online application system.
  • Fill the online application form that will be made available (on official website) in April 2019.

     Attach the following documents with the application form:

  • Official transcripts and official copies of diplomas or degree certificates from all undergraduate and graduate schools.
  • Two reference letters
  • TOEFL / IELTS certificate (if available, at time of applying). If not, applicants will be asked to sit in the test before receiving a final decision of scholarship award.
  • Admission letter of the university
  • Thesis paper of their master’s degree (for PhD scholars).

Note: All required documents must be provided in English. The application material should be sent by mail to the IMF Regional Office (see address below).

June 1, 2019 (for admission in September / October 2019).

December 1, 2019 (for admission in April 2020, in case scholarships are available from above selection).
