Biography of Mikhail Kalashnikov

Early Life

Mikhail Kalashnikov inventor of AK-47, was born on 10th November 1919 in Kurya, Altai, Russia. He belonged to a family of peasants. In 1930, his family was forced to leave their property and migrate to the village named Nizhnyaya. In his youth he was surrounded by a lot of diseases but was attached to machines.

Initially he was inspired to become a poet, but fortune didn’t favor him and he went in another direction. He joined the military in 1938, as a tank mechanic. That gave him the chance to be aware of mechanics; there he worked on many inventions which were for the improvement of tank functionality.

He was injured in the battle against the German Nazis. But as soon as he recovered from those injuries, he started working on weapons. After inventing the AK-47, he worked to develop further more fire arms. And after many types of weapons and projects he finally reached at the position of general.

Interest in weapons

When he with his family forced to move to another place, there he had to do farming and hunting. And he frequently used his father’s rifle. This was the initial step for his attachment to weapons.

But when he joined military and found job as tank mechanic, his passion for weapons increased and led him to invent several weapons.

Inventor of AK-47

Just after the end of World War II, he invented a new type of weapon, which is an automatic rifle AK-47.  From a number of designs of weapons his design was selected because it was proved to be clean and easy to use. It can be used in different environments like deserts, jungles etc.

AK-47

AK stands for “Automatic Kalashnikov” and simply they are known as Kalashnikov. Now in today’s world AK-47 is among the recognized weapon brands of Russia.

Later Life

In his honor a museum was open in 2004 in Izhevsk, that town is known as the production house of AK-47. He was in 80’s, but still he worked to promote arm dealings as a consultant. In 2009, he celebrated his 90th birthday, which was held in Central Russian Army Museum. He was in his last stage of life in 2012.

Death

After spending time in very intensive treatment in the hospital of Izhevsk, he finally died in the hospital at the age of 93 years.
