Biography of Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov

Early Life

Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov inventor of Cherenkov detector was a well known scientist of physics. He is also among one of the Nobel Prize holders in the field of physics. He was from Russian background and was born in the year of 1904 in the month of July 28th. He was born in Voronezh Oblast which was located in Russian Empire at that time. His parents were known as Alexey Cherenkov and Mariya Cherenkov so it can be said as that “Cherenkov” was their family and surname. He started his initial education from his local school which was in the village of Novaya Chigla. Later on, he started his further education in the town college.

Education

As soon as his intermediate was completed, he joined the Voronezh State University of Russia and studied over there for four years. He earned his bachelor’s degree from there in the year of 1928 just in the age of 24 years. His fields of study in the bachelor’s degree were as mathematics and physics but his main interest was limited to that of physics and that was only his interest which led him to become the one of the well known inventors of this field. He earned his doctorate degree in the same field in the year of 1940.

Career

He had started his formal career just after the completion of his bachelor’s degree and on the other hand, he completed his studies after working for many years. He started his career as a senior researcher in Lebedev institute of Physics and he worked there for many years. After that, he completed his education and hence started professorship at the university in the field of experimental physics. He worked on many other posts too and made numerous contributions to the field of physics and the most important one can be said as that of this invention.

Inventor of Cherenkov Detector

Cherenkov Detector was invented by Pavel Alekseyevich Cherenkov and he is widely credited for this invention. This was the same invention which led him to be securing the Nobel Prize in the field. In the year of 1934, while working in a laboratory, he invented this thing after observing the emission of the light colored as blue from a water bottle.

Cherenkov Detector

Cherenkov detector can be said as an instrument which is solely used in the field of physics. The important and basic function of this detector is to detect different particles by using the threshold of the speed which is used for production of light. The basic principle of its working is a as that if a particle is passing from any object with more speed as compared to that of light, than it can be observed. Hence in this way, this detector is used to detect that specific particle.

Death

He died in the year of 1990 on January 6th.  He was almost 85 years of age at the time of his death.
