UK Government Chevening (FCO) Scholarships for International Students

UK Government’s offered two types of awards Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships. The recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world. These scholarships are awarded to global applicants all over the world. The scheme makes awards to outstanding students with leadership potential from around the world to study full-time postgraduate courses at any university in the UK. The aim of this scholarship program is to allow excellent emerging leaders to pursue 1 year master’s degree from all over the world in the UK. The candidates must be:

  • Passionate about their field or course
  • Have new ideas
  • Leadership qualities.

Along with studying in the UK, a candidate will develop academically and professionally, network extensively, and experience the UK culture and traditions.

Fields of Study / Subjects

Applicants can select any field for a master’s degree offered by any university in the UK under the Chevening scholarship scheme. The courses which you choose must be:

  • Full time
  • Taught Master’s
  • Begin in September or October (autumn)
  • Based in the UK
  • Lead to a master’s degree qualification.

Note: Courses cannot be part time, distance learning, less than 9 months in duration, more than 12 months in duration Ph.D. or DPhil, and taught with more than 1 month of study outside the UK.

Normally duration is one year for master’s studies but the applicants extend the year according to the subjects.

Scholarships Description / Details

These scholarships cover:

  • Covers tuition fees
  • A monthly living allowance
  • An economy class returns airfare to and from the UK
  • An arrival allowance
  • A homeward departure allowance
  • Additional grants and allowances to cover essential expenditure.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for these scholarships must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country
  • Have an undergraduate degree from any recognized university with excellent academic record/grades
  • Must have at least two years’ work experience
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these
  • Meet the Chevening English language requirement such as Academic IELTS, Pearson PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English: Advanced (CEA), Trinity ISE II (B2)

Not Eligible applicants for Chevening Scholarships

  • Not eligible who hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong)
  • Are not an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee since July 2015 of Her Majesty’s Government including British Embassies/High Commissions, the Department for International Development, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Defense and the Home Office, the British Council, a partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities
  • Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship. Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but may be eligible to apply for a fellowship five years after completion of the first award
  • Scholarships Bond
  • Applicants must return to their country/home for a minimum of two years after their Master’s scholarship has ended.
