Biography of William Bradford Shockley

Early Life

William Bradford Shockley inventor of transistor was a very famous and well known scientist. He was born in the year of 1910 on February 13 in United Kingdom’s city London. His parents were American descent pattern and they moved back to United States of America, when he was just three years of age. After his initial education, he joined the California Institute of Technology. He earned his bachelor’s degree in the field of science from there in the year of 1932. He was just 23 years of age and still a student when he got married.

Career

He got his doctorate degree just in the age of 26 years in the year of 1936. He earned the degree from Massachusetts institute of Technology. After completion of his study, he was intended to start his formal career as a physicist and a scientist. Keeping this thing in mind, he joined the company Bell Labs which was located in New Jersey. He made numerous contributions to the field sciences over there and was recognized as a professional scientist. He worked in the field of Radar in the days of World War 2.

Inventor of Transistor

As mentioned earlier, he was working in t Bell Labs which was a famous company of electronics. He was intended to invent something new and for this thing hie worked with two other scientists. He succeeded in his task and invented the transistor with two of his other co workers named as John Bardeen and Walter Houser. All of the guys were much praised for their valuable invention and hence, they were awarded the Nobel Prize of physics in the year of 1956. The prize was shared by three of the guys and it laid the foundation of a new history in fields of electronics and physics.

Transistor

Transistor was invented by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Houser Brattain for the first time. All of them were co inventors. Transistor can be said as a device which is in form of semiconductor. The main function of the transistor is to switch and amplify the electric power and electronic signals. Generally a transistor is made up of such material which holds the capability of semi conduction. Normally, it has three terminals and all of them are connected to an outer circuit for the procession. When a voltage is applied to any of the pair of terminals from those three, then it works for the change of current working from other terminals. Now a day, transistors are made in both of the forms as integrated in form of circuits are simply packaged as individuals.

Death

He died in the year of 1989 on October 12 in Stanford, California in United States of America. He was almost 79 years of age at the time of his death.
