2025 / 2026 Scholarships in Canada

IDRC has helped doctoral students perform field research since 1982. Universities Canada has administered the IDRA program since 2022. IDRC is offering IDRC Doctoral Research Awards (IDRA) for national and international students from developing countries. These awards are offered for Doctoral Research program in Canada. IDRC has helped graduate students undertake thesis research in the field of international development. IDRC Doctoral Research Awards are intended to promote the growth of Canadian and developing country capacity in research to improve the lives of people in the developing world. The IDRA supports expenses for field research performed in the Global South. Applicants must use the research findings in their doctoral dissertation or thesis. The IDRA cannot be used to pay tuition fees. The IDRA program supports field research undertaken in the Global South.

Fields of Study / Subjects

IDRC Doctoral Research Awards (IDRA) offered in any field for research. All IDRA-funded field research contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and IDRC’s development outcome areas of:

  • climate-resilient food systems;
  • democratic and inclusive governance;
  • education and science;
  • global health; and
  • sustainable inclusive economies.

Duration of Scholarships

Doctoral Research duration is up to 1 year.

Scholarships Description / Details

  • The award will cover expenses up to CA$20,000 each
  • Covers one return trip from Canada to the developing country of research
  • Covers housing, food, insurance, travel within the country (ies), and several field research expenses
  • The award does not support expenses related to applicant’s relatives, spouse, or children.

Eligibility Criteria

 

  • IDRC Research scholarship is open to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, citizens of developing countries, or a citizen of a country defined as Official Development Assistance eligible by the OECD Development Assistance Committee in Africa, the Middle East, Asia or Latin American and the Caribbean.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian university pursuing their first PhD.
  • Applicant’s research proposal must be approved by their thesis supervisor. Please provide proof
  • Must proposed field research must take place in one or more developing countries, be conducted for a doctoral dissertation, and correspond to IDRC thematic priorities
  • Must provide evidence of affiliation with an institution or organization in the developing region(s) in which the research will take place
  • Must have completed coursework and passed comprehensive exams before taking up the award
  • Not be in receipt of two or more active IDRC awards at the same time. No time overlaps will be permitted.
