Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) Scholarships 2025

The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), situated in L’Aquila, Italy, is giving PhD scholarships to international students. These prizes are available to candidates in Italy from all over the world, regardless of nationality, age, gender, or religion, who choose to pursue a PhD. GSSI scholarships are given in four areas: Computer Science and Urban Studies, Mathematics in Natural, Social, Astroparticle Physics, and Life Sciences, and Regional Science.
The Gran Sasso Science Institute – GSSI is a global Ph.D. program as well as an international research and education center in social sciences, computer science, mathematics, and physics. It was established in 2012 in L’Aquila, Italy as the Center for Advanced Studies of the INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics). It was upgraded to a School of Advanced Studies in March 2016 to provide post-graduate education. The scholarship will cover lodging, free meal vouchers, and tuition.

Scholarships Description / Details

The PhD Program of Gran Sasso Science Institute has following benefits:

  • Free guest house accommodations for the first year for all PhD students. They will be compensated with 350,000 euros gross per month. The additional amount will be paid if they show proof of a rental agreement in L’Aquila.
  • All PhD students receive free tuition.
  • All PhD students will receive one free lunch voucher each day on working days, except Missions, other circumstances and school closures as per the redulations of GSSI.
  • Students will have insurance to cover any accidents or injuries they may experience while studying.
  • PhD students can get up to 1,200,000 euros (net) in laptop donations for research and study purposes. The payment will be paid as soon as the applicant provides a fiscal receipt.

Eligibility Criteria

Requirements for the GSSI scholarships:

The candidate must meet each of the requirements listed below in order to fulfill the eligibility criteria for Gran Sasso Science Institute PhD program:

  • Proficiency in English is must.
  • GSSI are available regardless of age, religion, nationality or gender.
  • Candidates are eligible to apply if they hold one of the following degrees:
  • Italian Degree:  applicants have four or five year’s degree or “Laurea Magistrale” or “Laurea Specialistica” based on the prior rules of the Italian higher education system.
  • The Selection Committee assesses international degrees for eligibility.
  • A foreign degree requires at least four years of full-time university studies.
  • Applicants must provide a copy of their degree certificate to secretariat@gssi.it

  • Degree certificate
  • Academic Transcripts or Diploma supplement
  • Reference Letters
  • Copy of the degree certificate from the university.
  • Academic transcript, which includes grades for all courses taken at the university.
  • Certain PhD programs may require additional files, such as a motivational letter.
  • In event that you are accepted, you will proceed to the interview process.
