Mostly, they don’t know the difference between the two languages but surely there is a difference. Well, in short it’s a common knowledge that HTML and XHTML are both languages. This post will reveal the difference between HTML and XHTML.
What is HTML
HTML and XHTML are both the languages which are used to write up the web pages. We can say that they two are just like the two sides of a coin i.e. head and tail. HTML was basically derived from XHTML.
What is XHTML
It is strict and keeps strong principles in usage when we compare it with HTML. The major reason behind its strictness is that it doesn’t allow users to sue the structure and lapses.

Let’s now study the difference between HTML and XHTML!
Definition and other associations of these two languages: Html was proposed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1987. HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and it is the major markup language for developing web pages and also the other information that is shown up in a browser.
On the other hand, XHTML was proposed by World Wide Web consortium recommendations in 2000.Stands for extensible hypertextmarkup language. It is in technology or technical language calls a family of XML markup languages that widest the versions of widely used hypertext markup language (HTML), mainly the language which is highly known for the written material of web pages.
Its file name extension, media type and development: When it come to the usage of HTML, it uses the file name extension of .html and also .htm, on the other hand, XHTML uses .XHTML, .XHT, .XML and also .html. As far as the media types of both the language are concerned, HTML uses text/html and XHTML uses up the media type of application and xhtml+xml.
HTML was mainly developed by World Wide Web consortium and WHATWG. It was extended from SGML. On the other hand, XHTML was developed by World Wide Web consortium and both are using the mark up languages. It was extended from XML and HTML.
What is the function and nature of languages?: The function of the languages are that HTML are basically used for writing the web pages on the other hand, XHTML is the extended version of HTML that is highly stricken and XML based and doesn’t allow its users to see the structure.
As far as the nature of the languages are concerned, HTML is a flexible and maintained framework and it requires lenient HTML specific parser. On the other hand, XHTML is a strict one and is restricted set of XML and it really needs to be parsed with standard XML parsers. The major difference between the two is the mark up languages.
Finally, the versions!: The HTML versions are HTML 2, HTML3, and HTML4.0 AND HTML5, on the other hand, XHTML uses up the versions of XHTML1, XHTML1.1, XHTML 2, and XHTML5.
