Biography of Bruce Henderson

Early Life

Bruce Henderson Founder of The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) was born in Nashville at a farm on 30^th April, 1915. He got his early education from a school named the Peabody Demonstration School (PDS). He got admission in that school from fourth grade in 1925 and studied in the same school until his graduation of high school which he completed in 1932. According to him, his life was very good at that institution. At that school, he used to play in the football team and during a match he broke his tooth and in another match broke another two permanently. His life at that institute was so much special for him because it was that institute in which he met his first date named Catherine Porter.

Higher Studies and Work

He entered into his professional carrier as a salesman into the company of his father which was owned by his father for 50 years. That company was the Southwestern Company. During the same time he also got admission in the University of Virginia, but left that very soon and joined the Vanderbilt University. He pursued an undergraduate degree in the field of mechanical engineering from there in 1937. After completing his undergraduate degree, he went on to attend Harvard Business School for his post-graduation degree. But unfortunately he didn’t complete his study at Harvard Business School and left that for the sake of working for Westinghouse Corporation.

Founder of Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

He worked at the Westinghouse Corporation for the 18 years of his life. While working there he reached the designation of a vice president when he was 37 years of age. He became the youngest vice president in the history of the company at that time.

He left the Westinghouse Corporation in 1959 and joined another consulting group with the name of Arthur D. Little for its management servicesas a senior vice president. But due to some conflicts over the leadership of the firm he left that in1963. After that he got a challenge from the CEO of the Boston Company for opening a consulting firm and he accepted that challenge and opened a firm as its subsidiary with the name of “Management and Consulting Division of the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company”. Its formation and starting of operations was in the same year of 1963. He used to consult people who were the clients of bank. He managed that firm very efficiently and first month’s billing were very less so that he was able to hire another consultant in December 1963 named Arthur P. Contas.

This was the initial phase of Boston Consulting Group. Later on when the from progressed he took it as an independent firm and left its parent company “The Boston Company”, then it was simply called as the Boston Consulting Group (BCG).

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a consulting firm of the United States. Its main office is located in Boston. It is a multinational consulting firm of management. This firm’s offices are present in almost 45 countries of the world with more than 81 offices. It is included in the Big Three management consulting companies of the world. Due to its working environment and success it is included in the list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” and filled the third slot in that rankings issued by Fortune in 2014. The work of the company is to provide consultation to the public, private, and non-profit firms of the world for their management.

Retirement

He retired in 1980 as the CEO and the president of BCG. After him these places were filled by Alan Zakon. He remained the Chairman of the firm until 1985 and after that he eventually retired from everything. After retirement he joined the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University as a teacher.

Death

He died at the age of 77 years in 1992. He suffered for 10 days from a stroke that attacked him while his stay at his home in Nashville. He had two daughters and two sons.
