Difference between Alcohol and Water
Difference between Alcohol and Water

Apparently, both are of the same matter -liquid, but water is worthwhile, and alcohol is highly harmful to health. Water is a basic necessity of man, and alcohol is the necessity of its users. Without water, no one can survive on this planet. Our body contains 60% of water, which shows the significance of water.

Water:It is a chemical substance made up of oxygen and hydrogen.

Alcohol: It is a chemical compound more associated with a hydroxyl functional group and a carbon atom.

Let’s dig out the difference between Alcohol and Water

The difference in the states and functions:

Water is a more commonly used substance that is made up of oxygen and hydrogen. It is found in all three states of matter.

  • Liquid
  • Solid
  • Gas

Naturally, water is present in the form of liquid, but it changes its state depending upon the temperature. It turns into solid-state when water is frozen and moulds its liquidity into ice. In the gaseous state, water transforms itself into water vapours or steam.

Alcohol exists only in a liquid state as it doesn’t have the ability to turn into solid or gas form. Alcohol functions are related to Ethanol, which is the type of alcohol and is mainly used in making beverages, alcoholic medicines, and drinks. Alcohol consists of four subsets, which are as under:

  • (1°) is the primary subset
  • (2°) is the secondary subset
  • (3°) is the tertiary subset

Chemical Composition:

We know that the chemical formula of water is H2O. How is it so? Because one atom of oxygen and two atoms of hydrogen are combined together to make a single molecule of water. So, the birth of a molecule is highly significant when studying its chemical composition.

Well, in the case of alcohol, it is made up of different alcoholic molecules in hydroxyl depending on how much carbon is attached to it. The chemical formula of alcohol is CnH2n+1OH.

Differ in taste and smell:

Water, as we all familiar with it on which we are surviving. It is a tasteless, odourless and colourless substance that has plentiful advantages attached to it. Water has no smell.

Alcohol comprises a particularly bad odour or a very pungent smell. It immediately attacks the brain nerve and nasal tracts. When it comes to its taste, it carries a bitter and stinging taste.

PH value:

Water has a neutral PH value that is 7, which depicts that it is neither base nor acidic.

Alcohol is, on the other hand, acidic with a PH value less than 7.

Boiling Fact:

Water has different boiling points, mainly depending upon the area in which it exists. At sea level, the water instantly boils at 100°C, when it comes to the height (on a mountain), water boils at 68°C. Water is a liquid state of matter but also turns into a solid-state as ice and the gaseous state as steam. It doesn’t have the static temperature.

Alcohol or Ethanol has a static temperature for boiling. It boils at a temperature of 78.29°C.

Density:

The density of distilled liquor is lower than water; thus, water contains a higher density.

Usage and benefits:

Water is a life-sustaining element, which we need until our last breath. Water has the ability to dissolve many substances like gas, liquid, salt, and sugar. It can be utilized in making food products.

Alcohol and Ethanol can be utilized in making beverages or toxic drinks. In parties, the people belonging to upper-class mainly consume alcohol like beer, wine, vodka, whisky, and other drinks. On one side, it is harmful, but on the other side, it has significant usage in medical purposes, science, and industrial experimentation.  It is used as a fuel sometimes and in the making of perfumes as well.

Water and alcohol have opposite tendencies, one is life-giving, and the other is life-taking. The usage of anything in this world makes it worthy or harmful. It highly depends upon the person how he uses these two substances.

Disadvantages:

An abundance of everything is dangerous and acts as a killer; thus, it is forbidden in Islam. Islam strictly forbids the usage of Alcohol as a drink. A drunk person immediately loses his senses; that’s why he is not allowed to drive or go to a job (in a drunken state). Alcohol severely affects the immune system of a person, causing many health problems like kidneys or liver damage, cancer, diabetes, diarrhea, heart failure, or brain damage.

Conclusion:

Summing up the differences, we can say that water is a molecular substance, but alcohol is a chemical compound. Water is the necessity of life, including humans, plants, and animals, but alcohol can be used for useful purposes (medical purpose and scientific experiments) or otherwise produce health issues.
