Difference between Measles, Mumps and Chickenpox
Children’s biggest fear is to acquire measles, chickenpox, and mumps through which they search escapism. Measles and chickenpox are the most common diseases which are associated with the childhood of a person. These diseases are infectious diseases. Let’s define them.
What is Measles?
It’s a disease mainly caused by a virus named “paramyxovirus”. This is a viral infection of the respiratory system – occurring mostly in childhood – cause fever and a red rash.
What is Chickenpox?
A temporary disease mainly caused by a virus named “varicella-zoster virus”. This disease is also common in children. It causes a mild fever and a rash of itchy inflamed pimples, which turn to blisters and then loose scabs.
What is Mumps?
It is also known as parotitis. Mumps is a paramyxoviral disease spread by respiratory droplets that usually produce inflammation (swelling and pain) of the parotid gland. Usually, there is one gland swelling initially then after one to three days another gland enlarges and sometimes the second gland enlarges after the recovery of the first gland. Most patients affected by mumps are children. Mumps also may lead to complications such as:
- Orchitis (inflammation of testicles)
- Oophoritis (inflammation of ovary)
- Meningitis (inflammation of meninges of brain)
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas)

Measles vs Mumps vs Chickenpox:
Let’s dig out the difference between Measles, Chickenpox, and Mumps.
Variance in diseases:
Measles spread through paramyxoviruses. It is an airborne disease that knocks your door with a large group of infections. Rubella rash is another name of measles. It spreads through respiration or fluids of infectious children. Cough, sneezing, sharing eating utensils with the infected person can spread infection. Measles primarily occur in unvaccinated children. Some parents don’t want to vaccinate their children, as they are fearful that vaccines will have adverse effects on their children. Lack of Vitamin A can also become a risk factor for measles.
Whereas in the case of chickenpox, it spreads through the virus of varicella-zoster virus. Similar to measles, it easily spreads itself through cough, sneeze, and touch of the infected being. It is very rare that chickenpox patients suffer from this disease more than once.
On the other hand, mumps is caused by the same family of viruses which cause measles know as paramyxovirus. It is a droplet infection that is transmitted from one person to another through droplets of saliva and urine or via sneezing and coughing.
Drag To the Indications:
There are surely some symptoms that appear at the time of acquiring a disease.
The measles patients will get the symptoms within two or three weeks. Following are the marks for measles:
* Blotchy rash
* Fever (usually of 104-105 degrees)
* Cough
* Sore throat
* Koplick spots (white spots)
* Runny nose
* Soggy eyes
* Body aching
* Skin rash
A widespread skin rash is a major symptom of measles. These rashes start from the head and spreads to the other body parts. They mostly appear after the 2-3 days of virus exposure and last up to 7 days.
Now, chickenpox show its symptoms within 10-12 days, the symptoms are as under:
* High Fever (usually from 102-103 degrees)
* Skin rash
* Loss of appetite
* Red or pink bumps all over the body
* Headache
* Tiredness
On the other hand in mumps classical tender parotid enlargement, which is bilateral in 75 percent, follows a prodrome of low-grade fever and malaise. High-grade fever occurs if there is meningitis or orchitis develop as a complication of mumps. Following are the sign and symptoms of mumps:
* Discomfort in parotid glands or
* Discomfort in salivary glands
* Swelling of the glands
* Tenderness of the glands
* Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
* Fever
* Headache
* Muscle aches
* Tiredness and weakness
* Loss of appetite
* Fatigue
Children’s distress of Body Rash:
In both diseases measles and chickenpox, children cause rashes and itching. Body rash is common but that body rash is different in both cases, measles red spots don’t contain fluid or blisters which is not itchier then chickenpox.
Whereas, chickenpox skin rash is full of red pimples, containing fluid in it. This the only reason why children itch so much during chickenpox.
While in mumps children develop swelling of the parotid gland in front of ears which is also painful.
In measles, whole skin is covered with red spots and in chickenpox, spots are less in number while in mumps, only glands are involved.
How much Duration:
The children who get chickenpox, don’t feel sick or ill rather their stomach gets disturbed for a short period of time. They feel hell much pain in itching. This lasts for a very short period of time almost 10 days if proper care is adopted.
Whereas, in the case of measles, people feel much sicker for a long time. The duration of measles lasts two weeks almost if the proper medication is adopted.
While in mumps incubation period is 14 to 18 days from exposure to onset of symptoms. And the duration of the disease is 7 to 10 days if treated properly.
Switch to Cures:
When it comes to treatments, either children or adults, dislike eating medicines, pain killers, and bitter syrups. Well, in the case of measles and mumps, vaccines are the same and are available in large numbers. Chickenpox also can be prevented by a vaccine.
