It’s been a controversial debate since the elections about which political party would lead and which one would support Pakistan? The people who voted for Imran Khan and those who went for Nawaz Sharif were eagerly waiting for the results. In the 2013 election, PML (N), which is the party of Nawaz Sharif, won a number of seats. There is a huge difference between Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. Let’s read about them in this article:

Nawaz Sharif

Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was born on 25 December 1949 in Lahore. He served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan for three non-consecutive terms. In addition to this, he remained the Chief Minister of Punjab from 9 April 1985 to 13 August 1990. He is a Pakistani businessman and politician. He is a member of the Pakistan Muslim League (N). He is the longest-serving Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Imran Khan

Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was born on 5 October 1952 in Lahore. He served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022. He is the founding chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party. Imran Khan was an international cricketer and captain of the Pakistan national cricket team before he entered into politics.

Nawaz Sharif vs. Imran Khan

Million dollar query? The million dollar query had been dwelling on for a week or so. Who would be Lahore’s king? Would it be Nawaz Sharif who had reigned conventionally or Imran Khan who had right off the former ruler to reign?

Selection of Imran Khan or Nawaz Sharif: a puzzle

People in Pakistan were stuck on deciding whether to choose Imran Khan or Nawaz Sharif. Both hated Zardari. Both wanted mid-term elections. Both of them presented a hefty manifesto that they could eliminate the nation of evil and would make it a good Samaritans.

Approaches of Nawaz Sharif & Imran Khan

Imran Khan wanted an engaging approach to counter the US, NATO and Afghanistan. On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif wanted to play it chilled and let elements take their course, in an instinctive flow. One of the dependencies of this approach is not bothering the Americans.

One more dazzling blazing difference between the two politicians’ approaches was that Nawaz Sharif tried to keep them at some distance by summoning court inquiries against the generals responsible for the 2nd May hammering.

What do People Think about Both of Them?

Imran Khan had designed a massive fan base amongst the literate middle class and the youth. That assistance had been the most outspoken and pro-active in Lahore. What about the other parts of Punjab? What do people ponder about Imran Khan, e.g., in Vehari, or Bhalwal, or Mian Channu? The vast majority of Punjabis live in rural areas, and the public is the sole factor that can make or break any party in the election.

Can Imran Khan manage?

So, can Imran Khan manage it? He might or might not? As Imran Khan is concerned, he is one entity. Rauf Hassan, who is a senior PTI leader, is an accompanier of Imran Khan. But what about the other pearls of talent of Imran Khan’s PTI? On the other hand, many people can be titled from Nawaz Sharif’s party.

Good and Bad situations for Imran Khan?

The bad case situation for Imran Khan will be a win for him. He will get 5-6 seats in the provincial assembly and will be the chief of the outspoken opposition. That’s greater than he ever had.

While the best case situation will be the complete path of Nawaz Sharif’s PML, either way, he will have to rejoice with people who keep betraying. Nawaz Sharif, if he can still keep his undefeated run, will most probably not need the help of allies to keep him standing on his two feet. But mere time will show what happens.

Comparison of US visits

Imran Khan’s visit to the US was calculated to be nine times less costly than Nawaz Sharif’s visits. Prime Minister Imran Khan had been friendlier with the Pakistani traders living abroad. He organized a Jalsa, a huge gathering to address the people in the heart of Washington DC. Whereas, Nawaz Sharif always addressed the Pakistanis in small congregations.

Imran Khan’s confidence and presence of mind had made him an extempore person in front of US President Donald Trump. While, Nawaz Sharif was found reading ‘gratitude notes’ from his slip while talking with the USA’s former President Barack Obama.

Comparison of the Economic Condition of Pakistan

Statistics suggest that trade was booming during General Musharraf‘s regime. But, there was a massive trade deficit from 2013 to 2018. This was under the reign of Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N government. During Imran Khan’s government (2018–2022), Pakistan faced economic difficulties, with inflation and external debt becoming more challenging.

PM Imran Khan promised change. He made reforms: changing his finance minister, changing the governor of the State Bank, and changing the head of the Federal Bureau of Revenue. Pakistan’s people had their great hopes tied to the new Prime Minister. But the economy continued to struggle, leading to growing criticism.

Nawaz Sharif vs. Imran Khan: Titans of Pakistan’s Political Tug-of-War

In the politics of Pakistan, there have been scanty few such names that have consolidated the nation’s contemporary history like Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. Both of them have been the country’s leaders, both in their style of thought, leadership, and scandals.

Three-time prime minister and seasoned politician Nawaz Sharif dominated the center-right Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) faction. Renowned for his grip on Punjab and businesslike reputation, Sharif focused on infrastructure development, including motorways and energy projects. Corruption scandal, however, sullied his reputation, and in 2017, he was ousted by the Supreme Court and self-exiled in London until his return to Pakistan in 2023. In 2024, he attempted a political comeback, but the elections remained controversial, with widespread allegations of vote manipulation and questions over his eligibility.

Imran Khan, however, emerged from the cricket field to become a mainstream PTI leader. He had promised a “Naya Pakistan” and mobilized youth and middle classes on an anti-corruption and change agenda. Foreign policy blunders and economic woes characterized his 2018–2022 rule. But removal on a no-confidence vote and arrest in 2023 made him a political martyr to his die-hard followers. Despite imprisonment and a ban from contesting elections in 2024, his popularity surged, especially among youth, and PTI-backed independents made a strong impact in the polls.

Their style is antonyms, Sharif establishment and risk-averse, whereas Khan is a firebrand, militant, and lives on street mobilization. Whereas Nawaz desired stability through diplomacy, Imran desired sovereignty and reform at the expense of a political gamble.

With Pakistan further immersed in economic crisis and political polarization, both leaders of the nation are declaring their fate — Nawaz Sharif in parliament rooms, and Khan in prisons and courtrooms — but both remain ubiquitous on the national agenda.

Conclusion

Whether Nawaz Sharif or Imran Khan, the people of Pakistan want a Prime Minister who is unbiased and runs a transparent democracy. People want to know about the current situation and future of the country they are living in.
