Nowadays, almost everyone is keen on going abroad, and the British Council has a big hand in providing such facilities. IELTS is an admission test for those students who want to show their ability to go abroad by showing their English ability. By this test, students continue studying knowledge of the English language and how to use it.

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an international standardized test for English language proficiency it tests your fluency and knowledge regarding the English language. IELTS has been conducted since 1989 and is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP Education Pty Ltd, and Cambridge Assessment English, which makes this available worldwide.

Scoring criteria:

 In short, as far as the score for the test is concerned, no minimum score is required to pass the test. But a criterion is to be followed by all the students. There is a notion of the score form in which the related knowledge of the English language. There is a test form attached to it in which the criteria and the score are mentioned. An IELTS result or Test Report Form is issued to all candidates with a score from 1 (no knowledge) to 9 (expert user) and each institution sets a different threshold. Institutions are advised not to consider a report older than two years unless the user proves that he has worked to maintain his level.

What kind of test I will go through?

This is an important question in every student’s mind. Here is the list of those questions that the test will contain.

  • Multiple choice questions
  • Short answer questions
  • Completing notes questions in which an incomplete part will be in front of you and you are supposed to complete it.
  • There is a question of summary completion
  • Flow chart completion
  • Completing a table
  • Completion of a diagram may consist of vowels and vocabulary eats.
  • Matching a blank on the text
  • True false questions
  • Classification questions
  • Completion of a summary with no word bank and sometimes word bank

These questions are more related to reading language skills. Don’t waste time reading too much but skimming and scanning techniques will help you a lot.

How do I prepare?

It’s important to note that there are several kinds of tests that you are supposed to prepare for. There are 4 language skills which are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. At the start of the test, you should have your ID with you. Without it, you cannot sit in the hall.

Listening test:

There will be 3 sections that will be consisting of this time limit:

  • Section 1 (4 to 5 minutes)
  • Section 2 (3-4 minutes)
  • Section 3 (4-5 minutes)

There will be a closed question which is to be answered by a single word or a couple of words. So, you will not get a question like:

Do you like living in your town? A student could just answer yes. Any answers like this will just be followed by the question why? So you have to extend your answer (what you should have done after the “yes” anyway). Anyway, the question is more likely to be:

Why do you like living in your town?: Here, in this case, the applicant has to explain and therefore the inspector hears plenty of English which will help him or her evaluate you.

Reading test: 

There will be a paragraph, which you would have to read that paragraph so that the reading material stays in your mind. With that reading material, there will be so many questions that are highly mentioned above in question types.

Speaking test: 

How can you best give the speaking test? Speaking matters when you talk to someone. In this section, you will have questions be the situation in which you will be pondering: For example here you need to describe one thing.

Describe a favourite holiday destination that you like.

You should say:

  • When you first go there?
  • How did you go to that place?
  • What do you do when you’re there?
  • And explain why this place is so special for you.
  • What were the experiences you had?
  • And you can also share the beautiful moments.

Writing Test:

In this section, you will have a topic on which you are supposed to write an essay. For example:

  • Your first day at college
  • Your ambition or any other regarding you can easily write about.
