Biography of John Wesley Emerson

Early Life

John Wesley Emerson founder of Emerson Electric Company was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts on 26th of July, 1832. His parents were William and Rosanna Ellen. He got his early education from Iron City College in Pennsylvania. After his basic education he went to the University of Michigan located at Ann Arbor, Michigan for pursuing his graduation. He was a student of William M. Moffatt, who was a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania attorney. He studied law there. He was also a student of the Bar association in Missouri in 1857. After completing his degree in law he practiced it in Ironton, Missouri for his whole remaining life.

He married Sarah Maria Young on 12th September, 1855 in Oswego, New York. She belonged to the family of Revolutionary war fame.

His Services for Military

He worked as a volunteer in the military without any rank during the Battle of Richmond in 1862. He was also wounded in that war.

Due to those services, he was granted with the rank of Colonel in the 68th Missouri Volunteer Infantry. That rank was given to him by Missouri Governor Hamilton R. Gamble in 1863.

Soon after his 68th position in volunteer infantry he progressed to number 47th and appointed as a major of the troop. In 1865 his troop was supposed to assist General Thomas Welsh during a mission at Nashville, Tennessee. Under his leadership he was able to capture 1000 or more prisoners in that war, pursuing General Hood.

Again in Law Field

After participating in the wars he came back to the field of law again and started practicing law at Ironton. He became a judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court. After resigning from that post he joined post of the United States Marshall for the Eastern District of Missouri. He was chosen on that post by President Grover Cleveland. He served there for four years.

Founder of Emerson Electric Company

He had no connection with electrical appliances or products at all. But despite of this he was the founder of an electrical appliances production company. That was possible in a way that in 1890 he met two orphans from Scotland who were trying to settle in their lives by opening an electrical and mechanical devices manufacturing company. He gave them $50,000 for starting that business. They formed a new company with his name “Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company”. At the start of that company he was chosen as its first President. He served that company on that designation from 1890 to 1892.

He retired from that post in 1892 by selling his interest to a railroad executive Herbert L. Parker.

Emerson Electric Company is a multinational corporation of America in the field of electric product manufacturing. It’s headquarter is in Ferguson, Missouri, United States. This company produces its products and services for a variety of business and buyers markets.

Later Life 

After retiring from Emerson Electric Company he became a Civil War historian. He also wrote about the history of General Grant’s campaign of the valley of Mississippi Valley.

Death

He died in Ironton, Missouri on 20th June of 1899. He was involved in three different fields. He worked in the fields of judiciary, military, and at last in business. Apart from that he also worked as a writer.
