Biography of Karl Friedrich Benz

Early Life

Karl Friedrich Benz founder of Mercedes-Benz was born in 25th November, 1844 in Muhlburg which is now a region of Karlsruhe, Baden in modern Germany’s area. He was born to Josephine Vaillant, his mother. She married to Johann George Benz, a locomotive driver, after some months of his birth. He legally got the name of his step-father Benz after some legal activities according to German law. He changed his name to his father’s Benz after two years when his father was killed. He changed the name in the remembrance of that great man who was his father.

He got education in good schools despite of life filled with poverty. His mother was very poor after his father’s death but she worked hard for giving him quality education. He got education his early education from Grammar School located in Karlsruhe. He was a very extra-ordinary student. At the age of nine years in 1853 he started studying at the scientifically oriented Lyceum. After completing study there he went to the Poly-Technical University under the teaching of Ferdinand Redtenbacher.

Interest in Locomotives

Initially he focused on his study but his fortune took him on the way his father went on. He went on to study locomotive engineering. At the age of fifteen, on September 30, 1860, he appeared into an entrance exam for persuasion of degree in mechanical engineering. He passed that exam and got admission in the University of Karsruhe. After studying there he got the degree in that field at the age of nineteen years.

Invention of Carriage

He used to travel through bicycle, and in those days there were horse carriages that were used for locomotion. He got the concept of horseless carriages through his power of imagination.

Training

Once he completed his studies formal and professional training was waiting for him. He got training in some different companies but no one was matching with his qualities. He got training in the same field of mechanical engineering in which he got education.

Work

After completing his training he worked at several places. His first job was as a draftsman and a designer at a scales factory, when he moved to Mannheim. After that he went to Pforzheim in 1868 and worked there for a bridge building company. He also left that job and went to Vienna to work for an iron construction company.

Founder of Mercedes-Benz

After working for many years for different companies he came up with many ideas and he started experimenting different things. He made several carriages, just like bicycles which didn’t use any horse for movement. After those carriages he made another successive experiment and created his first car which could run on petrol. That was named as the Benz Patent Motorwagen. History says that it was the first incident which started the company named Mercedes-Benz. That car was patented in 1886’s January. And Mercedes automobiles first papered into market in 1901. After some years both companies merged in 1926 and new brand name was discovered which was named as Mercedes-Benz.

Mercedes-Benz is a multinational company of Germany in the field of automobile manufacturing company. It manufactures cars and vehicles that are luxurious. It’s headquarter is located in Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. It is a division of another multinational company of Germany named as Daimler AG.

Popular in Media

Both of these characters became very famous in media in 2011 when a movie was made and broadcasted on television. It was named as Carl and Bertha.

Death

He died on 4th April, 1929 at his home located in Ladenburg. At the time of death he was eighty four years of age. He died of an infection from bronchial inflammation. A foundation was founded in his and his wife’s memory which is named as the Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz Foundation. This foundation pays tribute to Karl Benz and Bertha Benz for their work and participation in automobiles history.
