Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (LExS) 2021
Leiden University is offering Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (LExS) for outstanding international students from all countries except non EEA/EFTA students. These scholarships are available for master’s degree program at the Leiden University in Netherlands.

Number of Scholarships
The number and type of award of the scholarship depends on the budget available for each Faculty department. The type of award has no reflection on the students’ academic level of excellence
Duration of Scholarships
LExS is not a full scholarship, so its duration is 1 year. It is a partial scholarship
Scholarships Description / Details
Three types of awards are offered:
- € 10.000 of the tuition fee
- € 15.000 of the tuition fee
- Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
- LExS is not a full scholarship, so additional funding is needed to finance study and living expenses
Eligibility Criteria
- Non- EEA/EFTA students enrolling in a Leiden University master’s degree program
- Non-EEA/Non-EFTA students / Exception: All nationalities for Advanced LLMs & MSc Int. Relations and Diplomacy
- Applicant must have achieved excellent academic record in their previous study with the relevant discipline in which they are wishes to enroll for master study
- Scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will follow an LLM (non-advanced) or MSc program at Leiden Law School, as these programs do not award LExS scholarships.
- Applicant must hold a non- EEA/EFTA passport and will not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans, with the exceptions applying for the programs listed below, for which no nationality restrictions apply:
- All LLM Advanced Studies programs
- MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy
- Scholarships will not be awarded to applicants who have already obtained a Leiden University master’s degree
- Students who are granted a Leiden Excellence Scholarship must comply with and confirm in writing their agreement with the Rules and Regulations attached to the scholarship prior to the granting of the scholarship
How to Apply / Download Scholarships Form / Documents Required
- Fill in online application (must indicate that applying for a LExS)
- Pay the application fee of € 100
- Required documents
- Copy of valid passport or European ID card
- Motivation letter (PDF file of maximum 500 words)
- Copies of diplomas and transcripts
- Copy of TOEFL, IELTS or CPE certificate
- Up to date CV
- Letters of recommendation
- Additional documentation
Selection Process
The faculty selection committees will nominate LExS recipients and inform the Scholarships Team, up to 6 weeks after the LExS deadline.After that, the Scholarships Team will notify all LExS applicants about the decisions:
1- At the end of November – for the February intake.
2- At the end of April – for the September intake.
