Biography of Nicholas Callan

Early Life

Father Nicholas Callan inventor of induction coil is a well known scientist and inventor. He invented many things but the invention, for which he is known the best, is that of induction coil. He was from Irish background and was born in the year of 1799 on 22nd of December in the vacations of Christmas. He was born in Darver, County Louth which is located in Ireland. After few years of his birth, he started his formal education, when he was sent to get admitted in an academy in the Dundalk. He studied there for some time and after that worked as an altar boy. Later on, he continued his formal education again.

Education

After that, he joined the Maynooth College for further education when he was just 17 years of age. He joined that college in the year of 1816. He studied there for two years when his life changed completely. His field of interest was not anything till that time but after that, his interest built up in the field of natural and experimental philosophy. He studied both of the fields at the same college for a long duration under the supervision of Dr. Cornelius Denvir. He continued his education after that too.

Career

In the year of 1823, he moved to Rome for higher education and at that time he was just 24 years of age. He got admission in the University of Sapienza over there and earned his PhD degree. His field of study for doctorate was as divinity and he got this honor in the year of 1826, just in the age of 27 years. After that, he started his career through many jobs but his influential work was as a scientist and a professor. In the year of 1826, he joined the same Maynooth College as a professor and he used to teach physics over there.

Inventor of Induction Coil

Nicholas Callan is considered as the inventor of the induction coil. Though he made numerous contributions to the field of physics through many inventions but this invention is considered as his most worthy one. Induction coil can be said as an invention which changed the dimension of field of physics in variety of ways.

Induction Coil

It is also named as a spark coil. This thing can be said as a micro transformer used through electrical waves and hence it is a micro electrical transformer. The basic and most important function of this thing is as to produce the pulses containing high voltage from supply of a direct current which comprises of low voltage. Sometimes simply this invention is also considered as a normal coil which is used for induction in physics and it carries an alternating current of high frequency.

Death

He died in the year of 1864 on 10 January.  He was almost 65 years of age at the time of his death.
