Biography of Nils Ivar Bohlin

Early Life

Nils Ivar Bohlin inventor of seat belt is considered as an influential inventor and scientist. He was born in the year of 1920 on July 17 in Hamosand. This place is located in Sweden so it can be said that he was from Swedish descent and ethnicity. After his early education from town school, he joined local college for further studies. He earned higher secondary school certificate from there and was enrolled in Hamosand Laroverk. He chose the field of mechanical engineering for his further education and hence in this way, he secured his degree as a mechanical engineer in the year of 1939.

Career

After completion of his education, he didn’t start his career very soon and he took a gap for that. After three years of interval, he started his formal career in the year of 1942. He joined a company Saab which was an aircraft company and his job over there was as a designer of the aircraft. Another work for him over there was the development of ejection seats of the craft. Later on, he left that company after 16 years of long working exposure. He joined Volvo in the year of 1958 and his designation over there was a safety engineer.

Invention of Seat Belt 

Nils Ivar Bohlin is widely credited for his invention of seatbelt. As already mentioned that he got a lot of exposure of working as developer of ejection seats in the company Saab and hence he started working for the seatbelts. His main theme behind this work was to save a driver during driving if any accident happens and for this thing, he worked for almost 14 months. He invented his formal safety belt which was a three point seat belt in the year of 1959 just after one year of joining the Volvo.

Seat Belt

He was awarded a patent under Volvo for his valuable invention of a seat belt. Later on, he was appointed as the head of the department of central research and development in the year of 1969. Seat belt is also known as a safety belt and three point safety pin etc. It is kind of a device which is used in vehicles to remain safe if any accident occurs and to avoid any kind of serious injury. If a car stops suddenly or collides with any other vehicle or anything, then the driver and the other passengers in the vehicle will face a serious jerk. Seat belt is used to avoid any of the above mentioned situations as it grips the holding person and saves from the jerk. Fastening of the seat belt is a legal obligation to all the drivers and passengers now days.

Death

He died in the year of 2002 on September 26. He was almost 82 years of age at the time of his death.
