In Nepal the total literacy rate is 67.9%, male literacy rate is 75.1% and female literacy rate is 57.4%. In Kathmandu district was the highest literacy rate that is 86.3% and lowest literacy rate in Rautahat 41.7%. Education system was long based on Home schooling and Gurukula in Nepal. The first formal school was established in 1853 in Nepal. There are too low enrollment rate in the schools. However increasing access to secondary education sysytem remains a major challenge. More than half of primary students do not enter secondary schools, and only one-half of them complete secondary schooling. In Nepal, fewer girls than boys enter secondary schools and, among those who do enter, fewer complete the 10th grade.Nepal has six main universities: Tribhuvan University (Tribhuvan University had remained the one and the only university in Nepal in 1985), Kathmandu University, Pokhara University, Purbanchal University, Mahendra Sanskrit University, and the Agriculture and Forestry University of Nepal (AFU). Some newly established universities are Lumbini Bouddha University, Mid-Western University, and Far-Western University.
