The Cyprus Institute Dean’s Distinguished Scholarships 2025
The Cyprus Institute Dean’s Distinguished Scholarships are open to both national and international applicants. The Cyprus Institute Dean’s Distinguished Scholarships are a distinguished scholarship program for doctorate students. The scheme allows young scholars with outstanding academic performance to pursue their PhD studies at one of the Institute’s world-class research facilities.
The Cyprus Institute’s most esteemed scholarship program for doctoral study is the Dean’s Distinguished Scholarship. The program offers young scholars who exhibit exceptional academic achievement the chance to pursue their doctoral studies at the Institute. It also fully finances registration and tuition costs, provides a sizeable stipend for living expenses, and provides an annual research allowance. The scholarship will be available for the whole program period, subject to an annual assessment for exceptional performance.

Furthermore, students at the Cyprus Institute can pursue a joint or dual PhD degree through one of our PhD programs in partnership with the following universities: Hebrew University of Jerusalem, University of Groningen, Ghent University, University of Ferrara, University of Lille, Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Paris-Saclay, University of Lund, RWTH Aachen, University of Wuppertal, and the University of Rome “Tor Vergata.”
The Cyprus Institute was one of the first and remains one of the very few in Europe to oversee two European Joint Doctorate programs funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions: STIMULATE (Simulation in Multiscale Physical and Biological Systems) and HPC LEAP (High Performance Computing in Life Sciences, Engineering, and Physics), both of which were completed in 2019.
Duration of Scholarships
The PhD studies have a minimum duration of three (3) years.
Scholarships Description / Details
- CYI Dean’s Distinguished Scholarships include full financing for registration, tuition, and bench costs (16,400 Euro annually).
- A stipend of 14,000 EUR per year for living expenses.
- Expenses for travel and relocation from country of origin.
Eligibility Criteria
For Master’s program:
- Bachelor’s degree from one of the above-mentioned approved, recognized universities.
- Proof of fluency in the English language
– IELTS Academic version: no more than 6.5 (taken in the previous 24 months)
– Minimum score of 79 on the online TOEFL exam (taken in the last two years)
– Grade C or above in the GCSE or IGCSE (ideally with speaking)
The TOEFL or IELTS is recommended. - If you have completed or will graduate from a university where English is the primary language of instruction and communication, or have worked for at least eighteen months in a “majority English speaking” nation no more than two years before the proposed registration date, you may be exempt from taking the English Language Proficiency Test. It is necessary to present an official letter from the higher education institution attesting to this.
For Doctoral Program
- The Institute’s selection committee, made up of professionals from three scientific domains, reviews all qualifying submissions based on its criteria.
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews.
- Requirements for graduate-level studies include a Master’s degree from an approved university, a strong academic record in relevant fields, and a GPA of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent.
- Proof of fluency in the English language

Selection Criteria
After reviewing the submitted applications, the Admissions Committee will suggest to the Scholarships Committee which eligible candidates should be given consideration for the Dean’s Distinguished Scholarship. The short-listed candidates will be interviewed and assessed by the Scholarship Committee, which is made up of professionals in the relevant scientific field, based on the following selection criteria:
(1) Candidates must possess a first degree (BSc, BA, etc.) or a later degree that demonstrates excellence, exceptional academic potential, and overall evidence of a high-achieving student that is pertinent to the proposed studies.
(2) In accordance with the Scholarships Committee’s decision, applicants must submit a very strong application to The Cyprus Institute Graduate School, including a strong personal statement and a sample of prior or present work.
(3) The recommended primary supervisor(s) will not be present during the applicant’s online interview with the Scholarships Committee to discuss the student’s application.
