University of Newcastle Scholarships 2025

University of Newcastle or Commonwealth Government scholarships is offering for domestic and international students. These postgraduate research scholarships are offered for Prospective and current research students at the University of Newcastle in Australia. These awards are offered twice (two rounds) in a year. Commonwealth Government or University of Newcastle provides a living allowance so applicants can commit to full time study. The University of Newcastle is ranked in the top 200 in the world, according to the 2025 QS World University Rankings.

Scholarship Description / Details

University of Newcastle scholarships provides:

  • A free Dell laptop computer
  • Research related funding of $1500 per annum
  • Living allowance to raise the total living allowance to that of Australian PhD scholarships
  • A tuition fee scholarship covering the University of Newcastle PhD tuition fees

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria of the University of Newcastle scholarships, candidates must:

  • Hold four years of bachelor degree and have Honors Class 1 or equivalent and a high grade (GPA)
  • No more than two full time equivalent years into their PhD or one year for Masters
  • Applicants must have a current offer of admission into a research higher degree
  • International students have a master degree with strong research component
  • Must have international peer reviewed research publication or research experience
  • Applicants are required to demonstrate meeting the University’s English proficiency policy, an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 overall and no subtest below 6.0 (for PhD programs in the School of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing and Midwifery or the School of Medicine and Public Health the overall IELTS (Academic) score required is 7.0 with no subtest below 6.5).

How to Apply / Download Scholarship Form / Documents Required

  • Applicants can apply for a scholarship at the same time as applying for admission
  • Discuss your ideas with a potential supervisor at the University of Newcastle. Search for supervisors in your area of interest.
  • Think about your research topic.  Our research proposal template may be useful as a guide.
  • Register and apply for admission between 1st October and 31st of January. You will need the following documents and information as part of your application submission:
    • Copies of all academic transcripts.  If the documents are not in English, official English translations must also be provided.
    • A research proposal
    • Evidence of extra academic (publications)
    • Prove English proficiency requirement (IELTS (Academic) test results)
    • Copies of research publications, exhibitions or conference papers
    • Curriculum Vitae
    • Details of previous research experience (research work experience)
    • The name of your potential supervisor/s at the University of Newcastle
