TWAS-DBT Scholarships 2025
The World Academy of Science (TWAS) and The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology in India have established a fellowship/scholarship program for international students from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD/Postgraduate study in biotechnology. Applicants may be registered for a PhD degree in their home country, or may enroll in a PhD course at a host laboratory/institute in India.

- Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology
- Biological Systems and Organisms
- Medical and Health Sciences incl. Neurosciences
- Chemical Sciences

The duration is up to 5 years for PhD/postgraduate
Scholarships Description / Details
Grants for applicants by the DBT:
- The TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowships support PhD studies in biotechnology at leading research institutions in India for up to five years.
- Applicants can either pursue a Sandwich Fellowship (for those already enrolled in a PhD program in their home country, lasting 12 months to 2 years) or a Full-Time Fellowship (for those not yet registered, initially granted for 3 years with possible extension to 5 years).
- DBT provides a monthly stipend (Rs. 37,000 for the first two years, Rs. 42,000 thereafter), health insurance, and a contingency grant (Rs. 50,000 per year), along with House Rent Allowance (HRA) per Indian government rules.
- TWAS covers travel expenses and visa reimbursement.
- The language of instruction is English
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for these scholarships must meet the following criteria:
- Maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year
- Have nationals of a developing country (other than India)
- Not have any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country
- Have a Master’s or equivalent degree in science or engineering
- Be regularly employed in a developing country and hold a research assignment there
- For SANDWICH Scholarships: be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the HOME university
- For FULL-TIME Scholarships: be willing to register at a university in India.
- Be accepted at a biotechnology institution in India. B. Requests for acceptance must be directed to the chosen host institution(s), and NOT to DBT
- Provide a research proposal outline based on the format of the sample that can be downloaded below.
- Show prove of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English
- Show evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the scholarship
- Applicants not take up other assignments during the period of her/his scholarship
- Financially responsible for any accompanying family members
- Applicants should be aware that they can apply for only one scholarship per year from among those offered by TWAS
How to Apply / Download Scholarships Form / Documents Required
To Apply for this Scholarship:
- Applications for the TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowship Programme can ONLY be submitted to TWAS via the online portal.
- For SANDWICH Scholarships: (only if already registered for a PhD in the HOME country) applicants should ensure that the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the university sends a signed copy of the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” on institutional headed paper to TWAS
- Applicants should submit the Acceptance Letter from an Indian biotechnology institution to TWAS
- Applicants will have until the deadline to submit the Acceptance Letter to TWAS
- Reference letter
- Should you have applied to or availed any Indian scholarship (especially INSA JRD TATA and JNCASR-CICS) in the current or previous year this must be clearly specified in the application form
- Applications for the TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Scholarships Program should be sent to TWAS and CICS (by email)
