French Government Scholarships 2025

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and overseas Development launched the Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program to help French higher education institutions attract top overseas students to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees. These Eiffel Scholarships are granted to international students. The goal of this scholarship program is to provide a golden opportunity to future international decision makers in the public and private sectors in priority areas of study, and it encourages candidates up to 30 years old from developing and industrialized countries at the Ph.D. level, as well as candidates up to 25 years old from developing countries at the master’s level.

Eiffel scholarships are offered in the following fields:

Science and technology

  • Engineering sciences include earth sciences, physics, life sciences, chemistry, nano and biotechnology, exact sciences, information and communication, environmental sciences, mathematics, sciences of the universe, life sciences, and technology.
  • Mathematics and digital
  • Ecological transition
  • Biology and health

Social and human sciences

  • Law and politics
  • History, French language and civilization
  • Economics and management

Numbers of Scholarships:

The French government is giving several Eiffel Excellence Scholarships to international students.

Duration of Scholarships:

The sponsored study period must run from September 1 to December 31 of the year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Master level studies typically last 12 to 36 months (1 to 3 years).

  • M2 level entrance can take up to 12 months.
  • M1 level entrance can take up to 24 months.
  • An engineering degree can be completed in up to 36 months.

A Ph.D. level

Eiffel scholarships are offered for 6 to 36 months, beginning September 1 of the award year. The scholarship period will be decided using the following terms:

  • A 36-month scholarship requires registration in year one.
  • Scholarships ranging from 6 to 18 months are available for all candidates, particularly those enrolled in joint doctoral programs (joint supervision of dissertation and/or dual degree) with a higher education institution overseas.
  • Awardees in their third year of a doctorate program may receive up to 6 months of funding.
  • Awardees in their second year of a doctorate program are eligible for a maximum of 12 months.
  • Awardees in their first year of a PhD program can receive up to 18 months of funding.

Scholarships Description / Details:

Master’s level benefits:

  • The Eiffel scholarship provides a monthly payment of €1,181.
    • Maintenance allowance of €1,031 and monthly stipend of €150.

The expenses listed below are immediately covered:
§ One international return trip.
§ Insurance
§ Support for domestic travel.
§ Social security coverage.
§ Cultural activities.
Scholarship holders may also be eligible for an additional housing allowance under certain circumstances.
The Eiffel scholarship does not cover tuition or fees.

Ph.D. level benefits:

  • The Eiffel scholarship provides a monthly payment of €1,800.
    Additionally, the expenses listed below are directly covered:
    § One international return trip.
    § Insurance
    § Support for domestic travel and social security.
    § Cultural activities.
    § D. scholarship holders may receive an additional housing allowance under specific conditions.
    § The Eiffel Scholarship does not cover tuition or fees.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants for these scholarships must fulfill the following requirements:
§ This scholarship is solely available to international students. Candidates with dual nationality, including French, are not eligible.
§ Applicants for master’s courses must be under 25 years old on the date of the selection committee meeting.
§ At the Ph.D. level, applicants must be under 30 years old at the time of the selection committee meeting.
§ Applicants must have strong English and French language skills.

Process of Application:

To learn about the application deadline, candidates can contact the university’s foreign relations department by phone or email. Mention your interest in the Eiffel scholarship. Select a French school or university that aligns with your study or research goals. Candidates may contact the campus France office or the French embassy of their home country. Once the candidate’s French university or institute has decided to support their candidacy for the Eiffel scholarship, they will email the application form to the applicant and assist them in filling it out. In the end, the university or institute will send the application on the applicant’s behalf.

Note:

  • Only French higher education institutions can shortlist candidates and submit online applications through Campus France.
  • Direct applications from candidates or foreign institutions will be rejected.
  • Any French higher education institution can apply. Candidates according to their project of study have to choose by themselves the French institution.
