Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) Scholarships 2021

Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) are offering up to 10 PhD/doctoral scholarships for international students. The Graduate School is a joint project with Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient.

Duration of Scholarship

The duration of the PhD programs are three years

Scholarship Description / Details

  • Three scholarships in history and cultural studies will be funded by Gerda Henkel Stiftung
  • Two further scholarships for PhD canidates with Chinese citizenship are available through the cooperation of the Chinese Scholarship Council and Freie Universität Berlin’s Beijing Office (FU-CSC PhD Scholarship)
  • Receive a travel allowance

Eligibility Criteria

  • Have a master’s degree in one of the following fields (Arabic Studies, Central Asian Studies, History, History of Islamic Art, Human Geography, Islamic Studies, Political Science, Semitic Studies, Social and Cultural Anthropology, South and Southeast Asian Studies, Southeast European History)
  • Hold master degree with good academic record
  • English language proficiency e.g. ETS TOEFL certificate (minimum score of 600 for the paper-based test, 250 for the computer-based test and 100 for the internet-based test), Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, CPE (any grade), Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English, CAE (grade A or B), or IELTS test (level 7.0)

  • Outline of the dissertation project (up to 6 pages, with a brief summary)
  • A Curriculum vita
  • Certified copies of degrees
  • Proof of proficiency in English
  • Evidence of proficiency in the language(s) relevant to the dissertation project
  • Two letters of recommendation
