Difference between A.C. Generator and D.C. Motor

An A.C. generator converts mechanical form of energy into electrical form. A D.C. motor is a device which converts electrical energy into Mechanical energy. Both these devices consist of a coil that rotates inside the magnetic field of a magnet. A.C. generator is used as an alternative to electricity. Especially in the countries which suffer from load-shedding, people generally use a generator. A D.C. motor serves many purposes. One of its most important functions is to draw water from underground reservoirs. Motors are also used in other devices like pulleys etc.
A.C Generator

The value of the voltage generated in A.C. generator depends on the number of turns in the coil that is placed in the magnetic field, strength of the magnetic field of the magnet, and the speed of the rotation of coil in field. In A.C. generator, the coil is rotated in the magnetic field of a magnet and it produces current.

D.C. Motor

In D.C. motor, current is provided to the coil and it rotates in the magnetic field. This rotation is used in doing some work. Torque of coil is increased if the current or magnetic field is increased.

A.C. Generator vs. D.C. Motor
Construction:

A.C. generator consists of a coil that is connected to slip rings.
D.C. motor consists of a coil that is connected to split rings.

Battery:

In A.C. generator, the coil is not connected to a battery.
In D.C. motor, the coil is connected to a battery.

Galvanometer:

A galvanometer is connected to the wires of A.C. generator.
A galvanometer is not used in D.C. motor.

Commutator:

A split ring commutator is not used in A.C. generator.
A split ring is connected in a D.C. motor.

Working Principle:

Working principle of A.C generator is electromagnetic induction.
D.C. motor works on the principle of torque/rotation.
Function:

A.C. generator converts mechanical energy into electrical form of energy.
D.C. motor converts electrical energy into mechanical form of energy.
Uses:

A.C. generator is used in countries which suffer from load-shedding. People use it as an alternative to electricity.

D.C. motor serves many functions in our daily life. We use it to draw water from the ground. It is used in pulley; it is used in the toys of kids etc.
Conclusion
both these devices are great inventions. They are of paramount importance in our daily life. They help us complete our everyday tasks much earlier than usual. They are used in every place from our house to the industries where they serve as a basic necessity especially in developing countries.
