Differences between Graphite and Diamond

Chemistry is a subdivision of science in which matters are studied. Graphite and Diamonds are studied in Chemistry. These both are studied in Organic Chemistry because they contain carbon. As in organic chemistry carbon related compounds are studied. Both of them are significant minerals and have huge importance. Graphite and Diamond both are tangibly dissimilar but chemically alike as both contain carbon. Graphite and Diamond are allotropes (tangibly dissimilar but chemically alike) of carbon.

Graphite

Graphite behaves both as a metal and nonmetal.  It is form of carbon which has three types. It is basically a Greek word which means to compose. Lead pencil contains Graphite as its major component. It has soiled black color. It has enormous uses in atomic, electrical and in machine-driven industry.

Diamond

It is allotropy form of carbon. It is one of the most attractive mineral known and it is also the unbreakable mineral. It has numerous use that are in making adorable ornaments which is sold on high prices and a large amount of profit is earned though this ornaments and it is also used in wounding and penetrating in industry.

Graphite VS Diamond

Color:

The color of Graphite is soiled black.

Diamond can be found in different colors after adding impurities such as crystal clear, reddish and may more.

Hardness:

Graphite is not hard in comparison to Diamond. It is soft metal.

Diamond is a hardest metal as it is used for cutting rocks and has many more application.

 Boling point:

Boling point of graphite is less as compared to diamond because it is bonded to three carbons atoms through covalent bond and has one free electron of both atoms. Therefore less energy is required to break the bond.

Boling point of Diamond is high as compared to Graphite because it is bonded to four carbons atoms through covalent bond and has no free electrons.

Occurrence:

Graphite is present in Free State naturally as well as it can be prepared artificially.

Diamond is found naturally.

Price:

Graphite is cheap and is easily available for all the people.

Diamond has high cost and it is not readily available.

Uses:

Graphite has many uses including atomic, electrical and in machine-driven industry. As well as it is used in manufacturing of  lead Pencil.

Diamond is used in industry for cutting and penetrating purposes.

Types:

Graphite has three types Flake Graphite, Amorphous Graphite and last but not the least Vein Graphite.

Diamond has following types White diamond, Pink Diamond, Brown Diamonds and many more.

Passage of Current:

Graphite has it a good conductor of heat and electricity.

Diamond does not conduct heat and electricity.

Conclusion

Graphite and Diamond are playing very important role in the industry. As graphite has much usage in industry in making electrodes, anodes and many more whereas Diamond is the world second precious mineral.
