Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) 2021

The Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is designed to provide higher education in Korea for international applicants with the aim of promoting international exchange in education, as well as mutual friendship amongst the participating countries. These KGSP scholarships are offered for those students who want to pursue their master degree in the South Korea universities. Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP) is now known as the Global Korean Scholarship (GKS). It is a fully funded scholarship program that offers 1276 scholarships from 153 countries. The aim of this scholarship is to promote international exchanges in the field of study and mutual friendship and understanding between Korea and other countries by providing opportunities to international students to conduct education at higher educational institutions in the Republic of Korea in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. A candidate must succeed in the 1st round of selection which is managed by the Korean embassy to get selected as a GKS awardee, by passing the 1st round an awardee will hold the citizenship or National Institute for International Education (NIIED) – designated Korean universities.

Duration of Scholarship:

The duration of this scholarship is 4 years for undergraduate study, 2 years for graduate study, and a research program for 6 months or 1 year.

Scholarship Description / Details:

KGSP scholarship provides the following benefits to the international students:

  • Airfare Round: Trip economy class ticket
  • Monthly Allowance: 900,000 KRW ($800) per month
  • Research Allowance: 210,000  KRW ($185) for scholars in the field of humanities and social sciences, 240,000 KRW for scholars in natural and mechanic sciences (ONLY FOR GRADUATE PROGRAM)
  • Settlement Allowance: 200,000 KRW ($180) upon arrival
  • Language Training Fee: Full coverage
  • Tuition: All admission fees are waived by the host institution (university)The tuition is covered by NIIED and the university
  • Dissertation Printing Costs: Reimbursement of 500,000 ~ 800,000 KRW  depending on actual costs (ONLY FOR GRADUATE PROGRAM)
  • Medical Insurance: 20,000 KRW per month (limited coverage)
  • Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month for scholars with TOPIK Level 5 or 6.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the KGSP scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be non-Korean citizens (whose parents are also non-Korean citizens)
  • Must be good in physically and mentally healthy
  • Must be under the age of 40 years for graduate scholarship
  • Must be under the age of 25 years for undergraduate scholarship
  • Complete a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification with a GPA higher than B or 80% from the previously attended institution for graduate study
  • Must complete formal education of all elementary, middle, high school courses for undergraduate study.

Application process of the Korean Government Scholarship Program:

Step 1:

First of all, visit the Korean Government Scholarship Program’s official website. Scroll down and download the application form file.

Step 2:

Here you will write your name, country name, and mark the degree program you want to apply for.

Also mark the following boxes :

  • Track of application
  • Application type
  • Field of study
  • Program to apply.

And give the following details:

  • Your full name
  • Your passport name
  • Your date of birth
  • Your country name
  • Your citizenship
  • Your age
  • Your address
  • Your phone number
  • Your email
  • University name and its location (country and city name)
  • Mark the gender and marital status box
  • Attach your passport size photograph
  • Mark you degree and mention your major
  • Write the title of your degree thesis
  • Mark the TOPIK level
  • Mention your type and score of the English proficiency test.

Step 3:

Here you will mark the tick under boxes if you have submitted the following documents.

Step 4:

  • Here you will mention published papers and awards (if available).
  • Then in the next three boxes write the name of three universities (where you want to apply) along with division, department, and major.
  • After that in the below boxes give details about your previous degrees (mention time period, name of university, name of country, your major, and degree).
  • Then write your GPA and score you have achieved (in percentage) in total of all 5 years.
  • Then in the employment box give details about your employment (mention time period, name of institution or company, your position, and responsibilities).
  • After that in the second last box give details that if you have ever been to Korea before (mention time period, purpose of stay, which city or region, and name of affiliated organization).
  • Then in the last box give details if you have ever received any other scholarship awards from Korean Institutions (mention name of sponsor, grant amount, and time period).
  • At the end write your name and signature.

Step 5:

This is form no 2 (personal statement), here you will answer certain questions that have been asked.

Step 6:

This is form no 3 (statement of purpose), this form is necessary for candidates in Master’s or Doctoral program only. Here you will give details about the study goal and plans.

Step 7:

This is form no 4 (research proposal), this form is for research program candidates only. Here you will give details about your research program (mention topic of research, objectives of the research, research plan, research methodology, expected results of research, and research timetable).

Step 8:

This is form no 5 (letter of recommendation), here you will write your name, your nationality, mark the desired degree program, and mention your major.

Other details are going to be filled by your recommender.

Your recommender will answer the questions which has been asked and fill the table about the candidate’s qualities and will rate you.

After answering the following questions recommender will then write their name and signature, date, his/ her position or title, name of university or institution, his/ her address, zip code, telephone number, and fax number.

Step 9:

This is form no 6 (letter of invitation), it is required for research program candidates only and it is filled by staff or faculty of the inviting university.

Step 10:

This is form no 7 (KGSP applicant pledge), it is a checklist that if you have submitted the following documents if yes then mark the tick in a given box.

Step 11:

This is form no 8 (personal medical assessment), it is the last form. Here you will give details about your health.

(A) Here original documents mean the document which is certified by relevant authorities like Division A Government Officer, Commissioner of Oath, or your school principal.

(Q) From whom should a candidate get the recommendation letter?

(A) Candidate can get a recommendation letter for undergraduate programs from their professors, teachers, or lecturers who have taught them before at the high school and for graduate programs from their teachers at college or university.

(Q) Is English language proficiency certificate (like TOEFL or IELTS) compulsory for applying?

(A) No.

(Q) Summarise the whole process of application?

(A) First you have to send your application to the embassy, the embassy will be shortlisted 5 to 10 candidates for interview and out of them 2 or 3 will be selected by the embassy, then the embassy will send their documents to NIIED in Korea, NIIED will select the applicant after reviewing the application and sends candidate’s application to the 3 universities selected by the candidate, then the university will review candidate’s application and confirms the selection.
