Albania literacy rate is 98.7%, the male literacy rate is 99.2% and female literacy rate is 98.3%. In Albania  elementary education is compulsory for grades 1 to 9. Most schools are public and financed through the Albania government, but currently several private schools of various levels have been opened. There are about 5000 public and private schools throughout the country. In Albania the academic year is divided into two semesters. Albanian education system is divided in to 4 to 5 levels: Preschool education  1 to 4 years,  Primary education 9 years, Secondary education, this level is further categories in 2 levels: Regular 3 year, Vocational or Technical 2 to 5 years, Tertiary education 2 to 3 years and Quaternary education. The University of Tirana is the oldest university in Albania. It was established in October 1957.
