Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program for International Students 2025 / 2026

 

The Hungarian government introduced the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in 2013. The program’s primary goal is to expand the number of foreign students in Hungary and to encourage Hungarian higher education institutions to recruit excellent overseas students. The initiative currently involves 70 sending partners from five continents. The application call for year 2025/2026 is now open.

Scholarships Description / Details

The Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program offers various grants to applicants, including the following:
One-tier programs for master’s, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, and non-degree

  • Exemption from paying Tuition fees
  • Bachelor’s, one-tier master’s, Non-degree, and master’s level students receive a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (about EUR 110) to cover living expenses in Hungary for a year until they complete their studies.
  • The monthly stipend for PhD students in Hungary is HUF 140,000 (about EUR 350) for the first four semesters and HUF 180,000 (approximately EUR 450) for the entire year till graduation.
  • Offers dormitory accommodations or a monthly donation of HUF 40,000 (please note that this amount does not cover the entire cost of rent in larger cities, particularly the capital city, if the student does not live in the dorm).
  • Health care services are provided in accordance with Hungarian law (Act CXXII of 2019 on Entitlements to Social Security Benefits and Funding These Services), with extra medical insurance up to HUF 65,000 (approximately 160 EUR) per individual per year.
  • Only covers student expenditures; family members are not funded.

Please keep in mind that these awards are only a portion of the applicants’ living expenses in Hungary; they must contribute their own funds to pay any other expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship and residency in an eligible country. Hungarian citizens can’t apply for this scholarship.
  • Applicants must be above 18 years old when applying for the scholarship.
  • Candidates must have excellent school record / achievements.
  • Applicant should not be a current holder of Stipendium hungaricum scholarship.
  • English language study programs require students to meet the host institution’s English proficiency requirements.
  • Applicants who are self-financing in Hungary and seeking a lower level of education (e.g., master’s to bachelor’s) are ineligible.
  • Applicants cannot apply for both doctoral and other programs within the same round.
  • Those with ongoing scholarship status or who have postponed their studies without withdrawing their scholarship are also ineligible unless the degree is completed by August 31, 2024.
  • Students must complete a one-year preparatory Hungarian language course before beginning higher education studies. In addition to the Hungarian language, subjects relevant to the chosen field of study will be taught in Hungarian.

How to Apply / Download Scholarships Form / Documents Required

To apply for the scholarship, applicants must follow a few steps:

  • Fill out the application form online in English. Application form can be accessed from this link.
  • To start and finish the application procedure, click the link created below.
  • Make an account and confirm it on the scholarship application website.
  • Choose your program (PhD, MSc, or BSc) and the relevant university.
  • A maximum of three courses from the same or separate institutions may be chosen by you.
  • Proceed to complete the application for every program you have chosen.
    Note: All submissions must be submitted using the Tempus Public Foundation’s online application system.
  • After registration, candidates can access the application system and upload required files.
  • Only stored applications will not be taken into consideration; applications must be submitted. Please be aware that applications sent after the deadline and without an online submission will not be accepted. Hard copies are not necessary.

  • Provide a copy of your high school or college diploma, as well as a transcript or study report.
  • Copy of English proficiency certificate
  • Passport pages with expiration date, number and identification
  • 2 letters of recommendation (for Doctoral program)
  • Research Plan (for Doctoral program)
  • Motivation Letter
  • Health Certificate issued by Medical Doctor
  • Portfolio
  • National ID/Copy of the valid passport
  • Acceptance of online application statement,
  • Supervisor statement, and
  • Recommendation letter from Hungarian host institution.
