Biography of Yash Raj Chopra

Early Life

Yash Raj Chopra, founder of Yash Raj Films, was born in Hindu Punjabi family on 27th September, 1932 in Lahore of British India, now it is a part of Pakistan. His father was an accountant in British Punjab administration. He grew up living with his elder brother Baldev Raj, who was a film journalist. For education purpose he went to Doaba College, Jalandhar in 1945. After the partition of British India he migrated to Ludhiana in India’s Punjab. He wanted to be in engineering field.

Debut in entertainment industry

He has the passion for film producing that led him to move to Bombay. There he worked with a director I.S. Johar as assistant director. His brother who became producer and director from a journalist, then he worked with him. In this way he entered into film industry.

Way to YRF

In 1959 he directed his first social drama which was produced by his brother. That went successful, leading them to make another social drama in 1961. In 1965 they made their first movie. In 1969 they made another two movies, produced by his brother and directed by him. These were the initial steps for the formation of own film industry. His collaboration with his brother went up to 1971.

Founder of Yash Raj films

He founded his own Yash Raj films in 1971. First film produced by him was “Daag: A Poem of Love” in 1973. Creation of this new film making company made him very successful and 70’s and 80’s are known as the golden years for his carrier.

Yash Raj Films

Yash Raj film is a film making company founded by him. There are about 30 films made under the badge of YRF. 12 movies from these 30 were directed by him and remaining directed by younger directors under his supervision and administration. Almost every movie created a history in Bollywood.

Later Life

Apart from direction and production of movies, he also remained on many prestigious designations of film industry until his death. He worked in “Advisory Board of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry of the Government of India”.In 1996 he founded a trust for film industry with the name “Film Industry Welfare Trust”. He also remained the vice president of “Film Producers’ Guild of India” for ten years. Moreover he occupied the seat of the Chairman of the “Entertainment Committee of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry”

Death

He was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on 13th October 2012. He was detected with Dengue fever. But doctors said that in addition to Dengue fever he also suffered from kidney diseases. After severe treatment in hospital for many days, on the evening of 21st October, he died. On Monday, 29th October, Dengue fever was announced as the cause of his death.
