Biography of Ernst Werner Siemens

Early Life

Ernst Werner Siemens Founder of Siemens AG was a German well known industrialist and inventor. He was born on 13th of December 1816 in Hannover, Germany. He was the first child of his parents among four. His father had some land and was a farmer there.

Education and Career

He completed his school from his native town and wanted to study further at Berlin in the Bauakademie. But his family’s income was not sufficient enough to fulfill the requirements of tuition fee. He then turned towards military education and joined the Prussian Military Academy, the school of Engineering and Artillery. He got training there for three years, from 1835 to 38.

He was very good soldier. He won many medals. He also made electrical sea mines which were used as a weapon against Danish enemies. When he came back to home from war, he diverted his mind from war related things to other technological inventions. Then he worked on improving the existing technologies already been made.

Founder of Siemens AG

He sold his first invention’s rights to Elkington of Birmingham in 1843. He worked on telegraphs and invented a type of telegraph that worked on needle. After that invention, on 1st of October 1847, he started a company with the name “Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske. That company formally started on 12th October.

Soon after its formation, the company became internationally known. His two brothers were representing him in two countries. One was representing him in England and other was in St. Petersburg, Russia. That company later on his death was known with the name “Siemens AG”.

Siemens AG

It is a German multinational conglomerate company in the field of electronics and engineering. It’s headquarter is in Munich and Berlin. As far as ranking is concerned, it is Europe’s biggest electrical engineering company. Its main field after the industrial automation unit is the manufacturing of medical equipment. This division generates 12 percent of total earnings.

Other fields of this company involve energy, infrastructure and cities, healthcare and transportation, and industry. Almost 360,000 people are employed in this company allover subseries in the world. It is working in more than 190 countries of the world. Its estimated revenue of 2012 was around 78.3 billion euro. His family still owns a healthy share of 6 percent in total equity and a seat in supervisory board.

Later Years

He was also involved in the contributions apart from the world telegraphs. He made a few contributions in the field of electrical engineering also, and due to those contributions he is named as the father of electrical engineering in Germany.

In 1880, he made first ever elevator working in electricity. His industrial carrier was ended in 1888. And eventually in 1890 he retired from his company.

Death

On 13th December, 1892, Mr. Werner von Siemens went away from this world. He died at the age of almost 76 years at Charlottenburg, Germany, a week before his 76th birthday.
