Biography of Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman

Early Life

Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman Founder of Jang Group of Newspapers was born in 1927 in a town of Gujranwala, Punjab. He belonged to a middle class family of that town. He received his early education from his native town. His education from Gujranwala included both school and college level education. After completing intermediate level of education he went to the Punjab University for pursuing a degree in Accountancy. At the time of the World War II his parents migrated from Gujranwala to New Delhi, which was the capital of British Indian Empire of that time.

Interest in Journalism

When he moved to New Delhi, there he was attracted by journalism. He found the books of accountancy very boring and journalism a field of attraction. He was very much interested in reading, writing, and also into the world of newspapers and magazines. He used to stick with the radio set to listen to the war related news.

Start of Career

He started his career as a journalist while he was a student. He initiated a newspaper for Muslims during World War II from Delhi. He named it as Jang “War”. Some of the critics said that he encouraged the war by initiating that newspaper but according to him he started that newspaper not for pouring oil into fire of war but he started that for the soldiers of the War.

Founder of Jang Group of Newspapers

After the independence of Pakistan on 14th of August, 1947, he migrated to Karachi, which was the capital of newly born Muslim State country at that time; he started the publishing industry of newspaper there. He used to publish a newspaper with the name Daily Jang. He founded that from the funds given by Abdul Ghani Barq of Feroz sons Printers. He was given a loan of 5000 rupees by that company.

Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who was the Governor General of that time, became so much pleasant with his that move. Muhammad Ali Jinnah also provided him the assistance of the government for running that publishing industry. But he declined that help by saying that he wanted the freedom of press not the chains of restriction from government. He also helped in the foundation of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CNPE). He was against any sort of interruption from government.

Jang Group of Newspapers

Jang Group of Newspapers is also known as simply Jang Group. It is a subsidiary of the Independent Media Corporation. It’s headquarter is based in a Publishing House at Karachi. It is known as Pakistan’s largest newspaper and publishing group of Urdu newspaper which is named as the Daily Jang.

It was founded by Mir Khalil ur Rehman. His son Mir Shakil ur Rehman is the head of this publishing house in Karachi at the present time. Mir Shakil ur Rehman is also supposed to be the third richest resident of Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Their other publications include Daily Awam, Akhar e Jahaan, Daily Waqt, and MAG The Weekly.
